How to get Startup India (DPIIT) recognition
Startup India recognition, also called DPIIT recognition, is a certificate from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. It opens the door to tax benefits, easier compliance and access to government schemes. Here is how it works.
Who is eligible
- Your entity is a Private Limited Company, a registered partnership or an LLP.
- It is less than 10 years old from the date of incorporation.
- Annual turnover has not crossed 100 crore in any year so far.
- The business works on innovation, improvement of products or services, or a scalable model with potential for jobs or wealth creation.
The benefits
- A three year income tax exemption under section 80 IAC, for eligible startups.
- Self certification on several labour and environment laws.
- Easier access to government tenders and funding schemes.
- A simpler path to closing the company if it does not work out.
How to apply
- Register your company first, if you have not already.
- Create a profile on the Startup India portal.
- Submit your incorporation details, a short write up on what makes the business innovative, and any supporting documents.
- Receive your recognition certificate, often within a few days when the application is complete and correct.
A common mistake
Many applications stall because the innovation write up is weak or the documents do not match. A clear, specific description of what your business does and why it is scalable makes a real difference.
