GST registration for startups in India, when and how to do it
GST registration for startups is mandatory once you cross the turnover threshold, and often earlier if you sell across states or on ecommerce platforms. You register on the GST portal using Form GST REG 01, get an ARN on submission, and usually receive your GSTIN in about 7 working days. Here is exactly when a startup must register and how the process runs.
When a startup must register
GST registration becomes mandatory in these cases:
- Turnover crosses 40 lakh for a business that supplies goods.
- Turnover crosses 20 lakh for a business that supplies services.
- In some special category states the thresholds are lower, 20 lakh for goods and 10 lakh for services.
- You sell through an ecommerce platform. Most ecommerce sellers need GST regardless of turnover.
- You make interstate supplies, that is, you sell to customers in other states.
If none of these apply yet, you can still register voluntarily, which many startups do so they can issue tax invoices and claim input tax credit.
Documents you need
- PAN of the business
- Certificate of Incorporation for a company, or the partnership deed for a firm
- PAN and Aadhaar of the authorised signatory and the directors or partners
- Proof of the place of business, such as a utility bill with a rent agreement or a no objection certificate
- A bank statement or a cancelled cheque
- A board resolution or an authorisation letter naming the signatory
The REG 01 process, step by step
- Go to the GST portal and start a new registration with Form GST REG 01.
- Enter business details, the place of business, the signatory and the bank details, and upload the documents.
- Complete Aadhaar authentication for the signatory, which speeds up approval.
- Submit the form. An Application Reference Number (ARN) is generated, which you use to track the status.
- The officer reviews the application and issues the GSTIN, usually in about 7 working days.
The ARN to GSTIN timeline
The ARN comes instantly on submission. The GSTIN usually follows in about 7 working days. It can take longer if Aadhaar is not authenticated or if the officer asks for physical verification of the place of business. Respond to any query within the given window so the application does not lapse.
Voluntary registration
Even below the threshold, voluntary GST registration can help. It lets you issue proper tax invoices, claim input tax credit on your purchases, and work smoothly with larger clients who expect a GSTIN. The trade off is that you then have to file returns regularly, so register voluntarily only when the benefit is real.
Common mistakes that delay approval
- Skipping Aadhaar authentication, which often triggers physical verification.
- A place of business proof that does not match the address on the form.
- A signatory name or PAN that does not match the authorisation letter or board resolution.
- A bank document where the name does not match the business.
- Not responding to the officer’s query in time, which can cause rejection.
Getting these right the first time is the difference between a clean 7 working day approval and weeks of back and forth.
